It was a bright, sunny day when we started painting the exterior of our client’s house in Columbus GA. It had been quite a while since they had their house painted and the paint was worn out and faded in several places. They wanted to have their home repainted and have it look like new since they were also considering selling their home.
Here’s a quick overview of the basic steps you need to take during any painting project:
- Clean the surface to be painted
- Fix any damages
- Tape areas won’t be painted
- Apply primer
- Apply main color
- Paint the trim
- Remove the tape, final inspection
Before we picked up our brushes, we knew we had to prepare the house properly. A good painter knows that the job always starts with a clean surface.
First, we washed the entire house using a power washer. This removed dirt, spider webs, and loose paint. We made sure to be extra careful around the windows to prevent water from seeping inside. After washing, we let the house dry completely for a day. Painting over a wet surface could cause the paint to peel later.
Next, we inspected the siding for any damage. We found a few cracks and small holes, which we filled with wood filler. Once the filler dried, we sanded those areas smooth. We also sanded spots where the old paint was peeling. This preparation ensured that the new paint would stick well and look smooth and even.
We taped off the windows, doors, and other areas we didn’t want to paint. We also laid down drop cloths around the house to catch any drips or splatters. This protected the lawn and flower beds.
Before applying the paint, we started with a coat of primer. The primer helped cover the old color and made the color stand out more vibrantly. We used brushes for the edges and rollers for the larger surfaces, dividing the work among us. It took time, but we worked carefully to make sure everything was even and neat.
Once the primer dried, we moved on to the main color. We began painting from the top of the house and worked our way down to avoid dripping paint on finished areas. Applying two coats of paint gave the house a rich, consistent color. Between coats, we waited patiently for the first layer to dry completely.
The trim work was the most detailed part of the job. We used small brushes to carefully paint the white trim around the windows and doors. It required steady hands and a lot of patience, but working together made it easier. Every so often, we stepped back to check our progress and catch any missed spots.
After the paint dried, we removed the tape and drop cloths. We cleaned our brushes and rollers thoroughly so they’d be ready for the next project. Finally, we walked around the house for a final inspection to make sure everything looked perfect – no drips, streaks, or uneven patches.
Our client’s family was thrilled with their freshly painted home. The bright and bold colors gave it a welcoming look that made them smile. We feel proud of our teamwork and the care we put into the job. Painting houses is hard work but when we do it together, the results are always worth it.
